floors...why not

alright well it wasnt letting me do what i wanted it to do...but i guess this will do. now im gonna start fiddling with it in rhino and sketchup to produce images.

im not a fan of the DP image generator. and it seems that the tutorial IS able to do some different things that our version might not be able to do. or if we are, im unable to find where it is.

so what i have done here is initially tried to powercopy a housing unit. basically by creating a pocket and a floor base that would have a short balcony....that was something DP and i apparently disagreed on.

instead i decided to make 30' floors (this allows for two story housing units to be drawn in) simply by making a slab. what i originally started doing was creating a slab from a horizontal sketch. i was able to extrude in two directions up to a surface, using the internal surfaces of the shelled out form as points to extrude to.

that worked, but i was hiding the fact that the floors didn't wrap around and continue through the form.
so heres what i did instead to create floors throughout the entire form...
-created planes offset at every 30 ft
-created a large square (covering the plan of the form) in a sketch at the first plane and extruded it 2ft
-offset all of the internal surfaces zero feet and joined them
-split the large pad from the joined surface
-made that split the powercopy

the result was an internal floor every 20ft that was 2ft thick....worked like a charm
i wanted to created and powercopy the individual housing units. but that doesnt seem to be happening.

sorry karl, looks like i might NEED to switch to rhino and sketchup for the last week to finalize and prepare sketches

powercopying sucks

does anyone know how to powercopy something like a pocket (yes i know i have done this) which has been generated from sketches and points and planes...but then when i go to instantiate, it says i cant because it cannot place all of the objects into the same location on the tree.

so basically there is NO WAY suddenly to make any powercopies that have more than one thing being copied. if i want to powercopy just a sketch, then thats fine. but if i want to powercopy a pocket...no dice

i cant figure this out and im getting pretty irritated. why does this program decide it SUDDENLY doesnt want to work.

PRINTED

a few weeks after the files were complete (and a few hundred dollars lighter), the starch prints are done. here is the family, followed by the individuals.

originally the plan was to keep them unwaxed and just white. however, for reasons of strength, i decided to get them waxed. turns out they were so beastly, they didnt need wax for strength. however, im happy i did wax them because they came out consistent and not flakey.

so here they are...

kinda working

so im way behind. working on parcel #2. but i guess since its now working, these parcels will get modeled quickly...i hope.
i used the file that was working with the powercopying. even though before i couldnt even use THAT file to create the powercopy, what i did was used the powercopy from before and just changed a couple of the inputs...seemed to work and has continued working.

so im just going to continue to model all my parcels in this file, and then delete the previous parcel and save.as the new file.

digital project, i dont like you.

anyways, here are some new iterations of the second parcel. i actually kind of like the look and function of the internal core being exposed. allows for the idea/possibility of creating greenspace within that area if the building core there were empty...hmmm

the alternative is dealing with a very very thick structure (more than about 400ft in some areas)...just some food for thought i guess

question...someone help

alright im losing my mind here. this is like 10 straight hrs i have been trying to figure out this problem. and it's for sure gonna keep me from having all my parcels done, let alone printed.

guess we can test that theory now karl...im ready for my 'F'

so i need someone to tell me if they have any idea what the difference is here and if i have a setting or something changed between my two files...

this photo is of the tree where the file is working. when i create an extruded pad or pocket, in the tree it shows that it is related to the scaling or the curve that was extruded....

doing everything the same (now in the unsuccessful file) it does not show that relationship.
i THINK this is what is keeping me from being able to powercopy the void. everything else between the two files is the EXACT SAME. i have no idea what the difference is besides this.

so karl, nate....anyone.
ideas?

why wont it show that in the tree?
thanks guys. this is killing me
